APRIL 10, 2012
Part One: The quote that really stood out to me in Ehrenreich's "Serving Florida" was "Managers can sit- for hours at a time if they want- but it's their job to see that no one else ever does, even when there's nothing to do, and this is why severs, slow times can be exhausting as rushes. You start dragging out each little chore because if the manager on duty catches you in an idle moment he will give you something far nastier to do." I do believe that this is something that does happen today and I thought that it was crazy that she hit that right on the nose.  I think it is crazy that someone I do not know can realize a fact that I have learned personally.

Part Two: Along with what was mentioned before I do I know this sort of thing does happen all the time. I work at Dairy Queen. I have worked there for 3 seasons now. We have 4 managers that work here. Their names are Kyndra, Brynn, Geoffrey, and Alyssa. During the times when we are not busy we are asked to do tasks to make the place look nicer. One of my mangers is more into telling us everyone what to do rather than doing things herself. At the end of the night we have clean ups and sometimes the managers, if they do not have something else going on, they help us clean up so we can leave early. One of my mangers instead of helping out goes in the back and gets on Facebook and plays solitaire while everyone is trying to move fast enough so that she will not be angry when she gets up. As Ehrenreich said in"Serving in Florida" the manger can be lazy while they expect so much more of the worker.

  4. I know exactly how mangers who sit around feels. At my work you can usually find one of them just sitting in there office, out back smoking, or the break room. It is the same thing with most of the supervisors. However, if one of the "normal" employees is found sitting around to much they will look for the worst job to give you.
