My Lai Massacre

My Lai Massacre was the worst atrocity that ever happened in the American military history. A company of  American soldiers were very frustrated of engaging the enemy and were emotionally down because of the casualties their unit had sustained. When they entered the city of My Lai located in Vietnam, they thought everybody in the villager were enemy sympathizers, so the soldiers shoot and killed anyone that they saw. The end of the day the American soldiers had killed between 300 an 507 unarmed, and nonresistance men, women, and children. Some of the survivors were hiding under the dead bodies of  their families and neighbors. My Lai massacre was not mentioned until a year later, when a shocking photos of the atrocities were splashed in the pages of national news magazines and the evening newscast. The photo the of top right is the bodies of the My Lai Villagers. The words of the photographer after taking this photo,  "A small child came out ... like he was kneeling down to find his mother, and some GI just finished him." Americans put this incident behind because they don't want to remember what they have done.

Official Army photographer Ron Haeberle is the person that took pictures when traveling with the company leader Charlie. In the year 2009, Ron admits that he destroyed more photos because it was too graphic.

In this photo you see the bodies of a man and a young boy killed with the young boys blood flowing over the ground like a river.

A US soldier has shot dead 16 Afghan civilians, nine of them children, in a night-time shooting spree in a village outside his base in southern AfghanistanAmong the dead was a young girl in a green and red dress who had been shot in the forehead. The bodies of other victims appeared partially burned. A villager claimed they had been wrapped in blankets and set on fire by the killer.

  1. It's very sad to kill the civilians without having done anything wrong, even though in my opinion there was a reason behind this i guess.

  2. Nur, it seems in war we will often see these sorts of atrocities. Can you research the latest one in Afghanistan and what happened just in the last few weeks? Many civilians were killed. Who did it, and why?

  4. In war I believe no one will survive. Its a war and it meant to kill people whether they are enemy or not.

  5. In Afghanistan, innocent families were killed. In a war, there will be times where an innocent person will die. From the book,a person killed a person from the opposing side. He could tell that he was not meant for war and felt guilty for his death.

  6. It is sad to know that the pictures that did get out are graphic. But it is worse to know that some pictures were destroyed because they were even more graphic.

  7. It is hard to imagine the kind of stress that could cause the soldiers to commit such an atrocity.
