Photo Essay

The photo of earth from Apollo 17 at night. The earth looks like blue marble and then the lights from the United States lighting up so brightly that you can see the perfect outline of it. What makes this photo so effective is that it was taken at night so the world looks so dark except for the United States and a few other lights. Its a weird feeling looking at this picture because usually when looking at imaged of earth I feel so small, but not with this picture. It could be because the picture is lighting up the United States, but some how I can imagine one of those lights being mine. The photo though also shows how much electricity, and power we use as a nation it is amazing the amount we use as seen in this photo.
The quote from the passage that I found most powerful was "We have become accustomed to the beautiful, iconic photograph of Earth during the Apollo 17 space mission that shows large patches of snow in the arctic, green in Greenland and the Eastern seaboard, deep blue oceans, and white clouds swirling over portions of South America and the Antarctic." The part of the writing that was most powerful was all the description that was given but we weren't seeing any of it in this picture. It oddly shows that our true colors come out at night with how much we are using instead of giving back. We use all of this electricity and that is the focus of the photo when the beautiful iconic things that we know are there can't be seen.
Nature to me is the purest form of natural beauty we have left in this world. Water is the thing in nature that means the most to me. It holds so much life yet it has a purifying sense that makes everything new and washes away impurities. Its the pure form of life that makes water so important.

  2. It is cool looking at the photograph and being able to pick out the more densely populated areas because they are more brightly light.
