Montagnards in Vietnamese culture

            The Montagnards means mountain people in French and is a carryover from the French colonial period in Vietnam. The term is preferable to the derogatory Vietnamese moi, meaning’ savage nonstandard is the term, typically shortened to yard, used by U.S. military personnel in the central highlands during the Vietnam, War montagnards who are made up of different tribes with overlapping customs so social interaction and language patterns. Traditional Montagnard dress is very colorful, handmade, embroidered. It is still worn to culture events and sold as handicraft. The first language of a montagnard is that of his or her tribe. In areas with overlapping tribes or with similar language patterns, people may be able to communicate across tribe language wit6hout much difficulty. The government has outlawed the use of the tribe language in School and those who have had school can also speak some Vietnamese.
